The garb in progress. Toni is wearing a green linen cotehardie, lined with plain muslin. Over it is a sideless surcoat in blue and gold that is lined with yellow linen. When the picture was taken, none of the linings were attached and the sleeves were held on with pins. I've been working steadily and the surcoat is done. The cotehardie sleeves required adjustments and had to be set in several times before I got them right.
The sleeves are goblet sleeves, long enough to cover the backs of my hands and tightly fitted down the arm. They will have 18 buttons from the elbow to the cuff. When finished, the cotehardie will have 107 hand-made buttons on the sleeves and from neck to hem down the front. I've already made 100 buttons. I don't want to count up the hours I spent on creating this outfit. I hate to scare myself.
Under everything, I will be wearing a chemise made out of plain cotton from the same basic pattern as the cotehardie, but the sleeves will not button. The full skirts of the chemise and the cotehardie will ensure that the surcoat hangs well. The outer garments are quite long, pooling on the floor all around me. The chemise will just clear the floor.
Each outfit should also have a head covering. I have made a veil out of handkerchief cotton, with a hand rolled hem. I also have a wool hood that covers my shoulders that I can wear in cooler weather.
